• The Writer

Hello! My name is Laura, welcome to my blog! I write weird stories, collect dragon plushies and stay up too late with my nose in a book. I am a wife, mom and child saved by grace. My hope is that you find encouragement here or at least a smile or too.
    God bless!

We have come from God, and inevitably the myths woven by us, though they contain error, will also reflect a splintered fragment of the true light, the eternal truth that is with God. Indeed only by myth-making, only by becoming 'sub-creator' and inventing stories, can Man aspire to the state of perfection that he knew before the Fall. Our myths may be misguided, but they steer however shakily towards the true harbour, while materialistic 'progress' leads only to a yawning abyss and the Iron Crown of the power of evil.
    ~J.R.R. Tolkien

"The only just literary critic," he concluded, "is Christ, who admires more than does any man the gifts He Himself has bestowed."
    ~J.R.R. Tolkien

“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisioned by the enemy, don't we consider it his duty to escape?. . .If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we're partisans of liberty, then it's our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can!”
    ~J.R.R. Tolkien

"Writers who see by the light of their Christian faith will have, in these times, the sharpest eye for the grotesque, for the perverse, and for the unacceptable. To the hard of hearing you shout, and for the almost-blind you draw large and startling figures."
    ~Flannery O'Connor

You write to communicate to the hearts and minds of others what’s burning inside you. And we edit to let the fire show through the smoke.
    ~Arthur Polotnik

Words - so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them.
    ~Nathaniel Hawthorne

"There are forms of insanity that condemn people to hear voices against their will, but as writers we invite ourselves to hear voices without relinquishing our hold on reality or our right to control."
    ~Writing Fiction by Janet Burroway

Christians have sometimes been suspicious of stories, because they really can influence you. If you read the Twilight novels once a month for a year, I think you'd be a different human afterward—and not a sparkly one.

Archimedes M. Quinn

Every writer has an inner editor.  Each editor is as different in personality as their writer is from another writer.  Some have names, some do not, while others are known simply as Ed.  Mine, well, his names is Archie.  Actually, that’s his nickname, his full name is Archimedes M. Quinn.

Archie has been around for quite some time, but recently he decided he was going to come out of his little inner editor shell he put himself into inside my head and let me get to know him better.

I’m sure all of you are wondering, “What kind of an inner editor calls himself Archimedes M. Quinn?”  (btw, he gave himself that name, I had nothing to do with it.)  Well, I shall tell you.

Archie is a red-headed, perfectionist-realist-skeptic.  That’s right.  He thinks of himself as some sort of James Bond, Doctor Who cross over, (not kidding) and is obsessed with his wardrobe.  He likes to be well dressed and tends to look down on inner editors who do not take their appearance as seriously as he does.  (Yes, that means he’s a bit of a snob.  Where did I get such an inner editor?)   His interests include (but are not limited to), rapiers, bow ties, pocket watches and owls.  (Not to mention diving his writer crazy.)  He most recently informed me that he had a pet Spectacled Owl named Theophilus.

There’s Archie, pocketed into one paragraph, though he says I’m exaggerating on some of his lesser qualities, therefore, I shall tell you about his better qualities.  First off, his skepticism.  Yes, I see this as a good quality.  It keeps me on my toes.  If he’s skeptical of something *cough*my romance writing*cough* it forces me to rethink what I’m doing and make sure I’m showing it correctly.  (Though, if it’s a rough draft I usually just tell him to take a hike and come back for the revision.)  Even his perfectionism and realist POV can be good qualities.  Though maybe annoying, they really do help.

Archie and I tend to argue allot, but in the end we’re still writer and inner editor and get along pretty well.  (And he’s slowly learning to be nice.)  There you have it, you have now been introduced to my inner editor, aka, the personality in my head that keeps me thinking, aka, the side of me that was so frustrating it needed it’s own character. 😉

P.S.  Here’s a picture of Archie and one of a Spectacled Owl.

Character Development

Where I talk about a few things that might help you develop those amazing dragon fighting heroes.

Crazy Mind/Character Madness

I type away on my laptop, stopping now and then to read over a new paragraph.  Stephen leans in and looks over my shoulder.

“What are you writing?  Is that my story?”  He asks squinting at the screen.

“No, it’s my college paper.”

“Well, are you almost done?  Are you going to work on my story?”

“Oh leave her alone Stephen!  You are such a pest!”  Kate comments from her place on my bed where she is reading.

“You can talk.  She’s working on yours!  And YOURS!”  Stephen points an accusing finger at Avalyn.

Avalyn looks up at him, she’s sitting on the floor, thumbing through my illustrated addition of The Lord of the Rings, “Oh please, get a grip Stephen.”

Tyra laughs, she’s poking around in my closet, “You don’t see me bugging her about my story do you?”

Stephen glares at Tyra, “You could care less.”

Tyra shrugs, “True, I prefer the freedom of the imagination outside the written words of a novel.”

Kate squelches a laugh.

Stephen crosses is arms, “I believe there are way to many females in this room.”  He looks around.  “Where are William, Silas, Esten, Terren and Connor?”

“They got tired of your whining,”  Tyra remarks.

I look up at Tyra, then at Stephen waiting for his response.  His face is turning red.  I raise my eyebrows at Tyra.  She mouths at me, “What?”

Stephen humphs and disappears.

“Finally, peace.”  Kate falls onto my pillows.

Avalyn cough laughs.

Tyra smirks.

I roll my eyes, “You know people, I am trying to do homework.”

“Trying,” They all say at once.

I grab my head, “Oh just shut up!”

I am answered by laughter.

Friday’s Five: Welcome Summer!

1. Seventy-eighty (EDIT: eighty-ninety 😉 ) degree weather, nothing but blue sky and sunshine, summer is here baby! 😀  *cheers*

2. I’m sure you’ve noticed the lack of posts this week, (‘specially those waiting for SoS).  Well, the reasons for this is simple; Who wants to be on a computer when the day is so beautiful and the sunshine is calling your name?  (Plus the fact our yard is being overrun with weeds and I’ve been commissioned to destroy them.)  And……… I’m stuck on SoS. *cringes*  Yes!  My brain hiccupped, my imagination took a vacation.  I have the whole thing outlined, but there are still a few details that are added as I write, and well, I’m not sure what should happen between point A and point B.  Sorry folks.  I am going to try and get myself inspired and hopefully have the next part up for you in the coming week.  *fingers crossed*  Besides that, I am planning on continuing the Character Development, so keep your eyes out for that as well.

3. Silas as cloths!  I finally came up with a design for Silas’ outfit and now the sketch I did of him is no longer just a face, but a clothed figure.  *sighs*  Very satisfying.  I’ll be sure to scan the picture in and post it ASAP.  (For those of you who may not know who Silas is, Silas is the Ally/Love/Mentor in my next novel called Tyra’s Stone.  A new page with a synopsis and detailed description of the story is in the making and should be up soon.)

4. Anybody else have a great Fourth of July?  I did!  Even my Charries had a good time. 😉  There was a brief time when I was sitting alone watching the fireworks, and as is doomed to happen, my mind started to wonder and I imagined what all my Characters were doing around me.  The outcome was quite amusing. 🙂

5. Just saw the movie Hotel for Dogs, and thought it was really cute!  Made me cry in one part. 😦

Have a great weekend!

In Christ,
~Laura
